History of the Protocol

The Secure Shell protocol has seen steady improvement and increased adoption since 1995. The first version of Secure Shell (SSH1) was designed to replace the non-secure UNIX "r-commands" (rlogin, rsh, and rcp). Secure Shell version 2 (SSH2), submitted as an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) draft in 1997, addresses some of the more serious vulnerabilities in SSH1 and also provides an improved file transfer solution. The core documents for SSH2 were published as RFC 4250-4254 in January, 2006.

Commercially developed and supported client and server applications are now widely available for Windows, UNIX, Linux, MacOS X, and other platforms. In addition the OpenSSH project has developed an open source implementation.
